Democracy should extend to the primaries

MoveOn.org has created a petition: They want the superdelegates in the Democratic primary to allow the voters to decide between Clinton and Obama, rather than the delegates deciding the election themselves. For every person that signs the petition, MoveOn will send an email to the superdelegates.

You’ve probably heard about the “superdelegates” who could end up deciding the Democratic nominee.

The superdelegates are under lots of pressure right now to come out for one candidate or the other. We urgently need to encourage them to let the voters decide between Clinton and Obama—and then to support the will of the people.

If we can reach 200,000 signatures, we’ll publish the petition as an ad in USA Today.

I signed. Will you?

We need to have true democracy in the national election before we worry about technicalities in the primaries. as it stands, there are 5 states in the midwest with less than half the population of New York, but the same number of electoral votes.

“Superdelegates” are all government officials from the Democratic party. most, if not all, of them were elected by their various constituents. they are the true original idea of “delegates” - people whom the people trust to make decisions for them.

also, even the regular delegates are not required to vote for the candidate they pledged for in the first place.

I agree completely. However, for this election, I think it’s important that we do whatever we can to make the process as democratic as we can, and that means we should worry about the small stuff, like the superdelegates, just as much as the big stuff, like the electoral system.
